Les Vignes

Vines

Oil on linen, 130 x 97 cm.

After spending several years dealing with architecture in my work, I have chosen a point of departure, in all honesty, in the desire to explore a wider, brighter palette. This painting is motivated by my admiration for the striking appearance of the pinot noir vines during the month of October. The leaves are set alight with colour for about two weeks. Then all foliage drops off, and the vines lay dormant until the spring. Although my approach here is loosely based upon botanical appearance, it quickly becomes an unconscious and spontaneous conversation simply about paint.
